In The Maine Woods, Henry David Thoreau recounts three journeys through the remote interior of Maine, undertaken in 1846, 1853, and 1857. Traveling by foot, canoe, and bateau, he encounters dense forests, dangerous waters, rugged mountains, logging camps, wildlife, and communities existing far beyond the settled world of Concord. His observations combine adventure, natural history, philosophy, and close attention to the physical realities of wilderness travel.
The volume contains Ktaadn, Chesuncook, and The Allegash and East Branch. Thoreau describes his attempted ascent of Mount Katahdin, his travels through the northern forests, and his journeys along ancient waterways with experienced Penobscot guides. Throughout the book, he reflects on the destructive effects of logging and settlement while recording the plants, animals, landscapes, and Indigenous knowledge he encountered.
Published posthumously in 1864, The Maine Woods is both a vivid travel narrative and an early work of American environmental writing. It reveals Thoreau as an adventurous observer willing to test himself against a landscape far less controlled than the woods surrounding Walden Pond.
