The Maids Tragedy is a Jacobean play written by Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher. The play revolves around the story of a young woman named Evadne, who is forced to marry the King of Rhodes against her will. She is in love with a nobleman named Melantius, who is unaware of her situation. Meanwhile, the King's chief advisor, Amintor, is also in love with Evadne's sister, Aspatia. Aspatia, however, is in love with Melantius, creating a complex love triangle. The plot thickens when the King discovers that Evadne is in love with Melantius and seeks revenge. He orders Melantius to be sent away to fight in a war, hoping that he will be killed. However, Melantius returns victorious and discovers the truth about Evadne's marriage. Amintor also discovers the truth about Aspatia's feelings for Melantius and is devastated. The play reaches its climax when Evadne, unable to bear the guilt of her actions, poisons herself and the King. Aspatia also kills herself out of grief, while Melantius and Amintor are left to mourn the loss of their loved ones. The Maids Tragedy is a story of love, betrayal, and revenge, with themes of loyalty, honor, and the consequences of one's actions. The play is considered one of the finest examples of Jacobean tragedy and has been adapted into various forms over the years.Amint. I wonder much Melantius, To see those noble looks that make me think How vertuous thou art; and on the sudden 'Tis strange to me, thou shouldst have worth and honour, Or not be base, and false, and treacherous, And every ill. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
