A first plant hanger either hangs straight and even or it doesn't, and no amount of restarting or re-tying fixes a knot that was tied on a guess in the first place, not a real understanding of the cord in the hands doing the tying.

Most first-time makers learn one knot from a stack of arts and crafts books, tie it once, and never find out why the second attempt came out looser than the first. The cord looks the same and the hands feel the same, yet the piece still hangs crooked at the bottom, with one side of the fringe noticeably longer than the other and no clear reason why. Nobody explained the tension, so the cord goes back in a drawer instead of onto a wall.

Four Knots. Twelve Finished Pieces.

  • Tie the lark's head, square knot, half hitch, and gathering knot until each one is automatic, tension included, not guessed at every time
  • Read a pattern's own header block for its exact cord length, dowel or ring size, and knot count before cutting a single length of cord to size
  • Choose between 3mm cotton cord for detailed, close work and 5mm, twisted 3-ply cord for a plant hanger or a larger, heavier finished wall piece
  • Mount a plant hanger or a wall hanging to a wood dowel or a metal ring the same confident way, every time, first attempt or twelfth
  • Correct a too-loose or too-tight knot mid-project by working the tension out of the cord, instead of tearing out an otherwise even section
  • Finish a piece with a clean gathered wrap instead of a lumpy knot that the fringe below it has to hide from view entirely
  • Set round wooden beads or metal rings as a deliberate focal point without throwing off a finished piece's overall visual balance
