Magnolia Spirit James is an independent woman. She loves baking, growing things in her garden, and learning new things, and her friends. She hates the curmudgeon next door. Unfortunately for Magnolia, Davis, the curmudgeon, loves Magnolia. When she decides to create a Mabon celebration with her friends, hoping it will drive Davis crazy, her life begins to unravel. Unseen spirits, poison fruit, planned accidents, ex-wives, voodoo, and witchcraft come together to eliminate Magnolia, her Mabon celebration, and possibly Davis in the bargain.
Set in the fictional community of Needmore, Florida, the story weaves itself around the plants of the South and the river, which is integral to the town's existence.
When Magnolia plans a Mabon celebration with ulterior motives, things begin to go awry. She is arrested for assaulting her neighbor with a weed root. Her younger sister moves in and makes friends with Magnolia's enemy. Her collection of quirky friends, including a six-foot transvestite from the Caribbean Islands who wears 5-inch Louboutin heels, help keep things exciting and educational.
Told in a Southern voice, this is a story where evil forces are everywhere, but you are never quite sure who's behind the latest catastrophes. So when a final witch-off (like a bake-off without the desserts) is evident, which woman will you root for, knowing only one will be standing beside Davis when it's over?
When the dust settles, and the spells have been cast, a friendship settles over Magnolia and Davis when they find themselves the guests at a Mabon celebration orchestrated by the loving people of Needmore.
