LOVE'S THE GREATEST HERO takes place in the state of rural Nevada in the 1960's. When rancher Dan Mawson tries to save money on a Charolais bull he finds there's more being sold than cattle. After paying for the animal the seller makes him another offer on a 'filly'. Thinking the man is talking about a horse, Dan declines. But to avoid further aggravation with the drunk, Dan agrees to have a quick look. The girl he 'buys', to rescue her from her tormentors, turns out to be someone he's unknowingly waited for all his life. However, the terror she's spent locked in a dark corn crib has turned a once competent young woman into a fragile shell, frightened of everything and everyone around her....especially Dan. Believing his life enough until she enters it Dan doubts he can face the loneliness again when she ups and leaves. The desolate emptiness of ten years ago after he buried his parents return with a vengeance. Sending him straight to the scotch. In the middle of one of the worst droughts of the century, Dan realizes worry over mother nature's freakish ways is trivial in comparison to life without the green-eyed Sharon Laurence. Trying to lose his hurt in the bottle he almost drowns himself until a simple trick by a friend shows him how close he is to losing it altogether. In the meantime, Sharon forces herself back to her other life... life that now seems like a dream dreamt by someone else. On the job at New Castle Pennsylvania Medical Center a stormy night brings a rape victim to ER. For a brief time the sterile trauma room becomes a dark rat infested corn crib.
