Loverless Beds and Other Pleasures is a powerful collection of contemporary poetry that examines what it means to live, love, lose, and begin again.
Drawing mythology and mental health, folklore and familiarity, Michele Mekel crafts poems that are both deeply intimate and universally resonant. Within these pages, readers encounter beloved cats and ancient deities, failed romances and enduring partnerships, childhood memories and adult reckonings, medical diagnoses and spiritual transformations.
Mekel writes candidly about depression, anxiety, grief, and bipolar disorder, illuminating the complexities of mental health with intelligence, humor, and compassion. Yet this collection is never defined by suffering alone. Again and again, the poems return to resilience, creativity, friendship, self-discovery, and the possibility of finding beauty amid uncertainty.
Rich with vivid imagery, unexpected wit, and emotional honesty, the collection moves seamlessly between the mundane and the magical. Wishes wait in bureaucratic queues. Wedding dresses become repositories of human longing. Vampires adapt to modern society. Goddesses, witches, and folklore figures appear alongside contemporary concerns, creating a poetic landscape where myth and reality continually inform one another.
At once fierce and tender, playful and profound, Loverless Beds and Other Pleasures speaks to anyone who has weathered loss, questioned their place in the world, or searched for meaning within life's contradictions. This is a collection that lingers long after the final page-a testament to survival, imagination, and the enduring power of the human spirit.
