Eleven siblings exchange text messages about their father, who, in his old age, has made scandalous acquaintances and engages in behaviors that try the patience of his many children, stirring up long-buried memories and resentments and leading each to express their differences and grudges in emphatic, funny and exasperating ways. Skillfully switching voices and perspectives, Rafael Gumucio adds the masterstroke to the portrait of Chilean mores he's been crafting for the last three decades. The story of a declining patriarch, The Poor Relatives is also a tale of estranged generations and a comedy drama with competing voices that overlap, retreat and poke fun at each other until finding harmony or rejection.
