Orphaned as at just eight years old, after witnessing the murder of his mother, David is living in the English countryside. Caught stealing food at the age of ten, he soon finds his way into the British army and is taught to be a drummer boy. Months later war starts in the colonies, and Davids unit is shipped off to join the fight.
In Boston he gets his first taste of war, and later that same winter he arrives in New York. Involved in several battles, he proves his bravery, and toughness after helping wounded men from field of battle, even after he himself had been wounded. For his help with the wounded, he is taken from the drum corp. and assigned to the medical staff to help with the wounded.
Just before the next battle starts, new replacements arrive from England, and among them is the man that he had seen kill his mother. Over the coming weeks their paths cross several times, while David has to figure out what to do about the killer. Her killer he now knows, is one of the Aristocrats and without physical proof, there is little he can do to stop the man. Even in these new colonies, the spree of murders continues, yet all without proof. As a teenager, he now has to pit his wits against that of a seasoned killer.
