The story of an extraordinary, highly original character, a kind of vagabond prophet of the early 17th century whose life teetered on the verge of insanity.
The Count of Permission or Knight of the Thirteen Swiss Counties, as he preferred to be called, was born in the land of Gex, near Geneva in 1566. As a young shepherd, he shouts out incomprehensible words to whoever would listen and curses nettles. His village considers him crazy and he thus decides to take to the road. I
n Savoy he becomes a kind of troubadour, amusing lords with his antics and making the ladies blush. He exceeds in flattery, love, begging and perhaps a little swindling and is invited to Henri IV's court where his reputation is confirmed. The court offers him the job of Censor. He writes up his own imaginative musings with bizarre titles, has them printed in small 16-page booklets and sells them on the streets of Paris. In 1606, he goes on a hunger strike and dies in the Saint-Etienne-du-Mont cemetery.
