En junio de 1577, Teresa de Ávila comenzó a escribir El castillo interior o Libro de las moradas, o simplemente Las moradas. Atravesaba una crisis, víctima de las tensiones y disensiones políticas y religiosas en el seno de su orden religiosa.
Jerome Gratien, humanista carmelita y padre espiritual suyo, le pidió a Santa Teresa que escribiera un nuevo libro en el que presentara un viaje espiritual que no estuviera basado en su experiencia.
Teresa escribió este libro en Toledo. Allí se había retirado: La obediencia me ha impuesto pocas órdenes que me hayan parecido tan difíciles, confiesa a regañadientes al comienzo del prólogo. La obra, terminada el 29 de noviembre de 1577, se considera su obra maestra.
El castillo interior o Libro de las moradas utiliza la alegoría del castillo interior para describir el mundo interno. Las moradas son aquí símbolos, aposentos o piezas que componen el castillo. Describen del recorrido a seguir para acceder a lo profundo del espacio interno y alcanzar la unión espiritual con Dios.
El tema central de la obra es instruir acerca de los fenómenos que acontecen en el alma. Según Teresa de Ávila el alma debe entrar dentro de sí. Una vez dentro, se produce un recorrido interior por las distintas moradas hasta llegar al centro mismo del alma. Esta es un castillo que se encuentra en la séptima morada y es el lugar donde mora el Rey (Jesucristo).
Las Moradas del Castillo Interior es el ultimo libro que escribió Santa Teresa de Jesús. Según muchos críticos, su mejor obra; y una de las cumbres de la mística cristiana y de la prosa española del Siglo de Oro.
