For some, the gift of life is not always a gift. Born into this world with a huge violet birthmark on his face, one that can only grow larger, thicker and darker with time, is certainly not anything that resembles a gift. It is a one-way ticket for solitude, isolation, mockery and humiliation. From nursery school through to the work world. It is the certitude that you will never find love or companionship except with a dog. But dogs die too early and solitude lives on.
This is the story of Christian Pieters, born in Brussels in 1960, severely birthmarked for life. At age thirty, sick with loneliness, he decided to get his birthmark surgically removed, amputated. He says today that it must have been the devil's idea. And it surely it must have since he exchanged one hell for another: that of reconstructive surgery. The first few operations were badly performed and resulted in atrocious pain and an even more monstrous appearance. Thirteen operations later, he finally had what we would call a ?human? face. But he no longer recognized himself. Thus began the second part of Pieters's life. A stage where he must accept that to conform to society's image, he had to give up part of his identity, his being: his birthmark. This leads him to revolt against the dictatorship of beauty and all the forms of exclusion it has created.

Today Christian Pieters has decided to tell his story and share his hope, however dim.
