La Messalina del medico veronese Francesco Pona (1595-1655) era nata come ritratto da aggiungere alla sua Galeria delle donne celebri (ed. 1633), imagine d'una principessa impudica in una rassegna che discendeva da una tradizione illustre, ramificata fino al De mulieribus claris del Boccaccio. Ed era nata libertina in una prosa lussureggiante. Ma in corso d'opera l'autore si imbatté nel Tarquinio il Superbo di Virgilio Malvezzi (ed. 1632), campione di un austero moralismo, e ne fu conquistato. Così la Messalina, da ritratto lascivo, si convertì in esempio morale, antidoto del vizio, riprendendo da Tacito la morte infame della protagonista, monito a donne e donzelle. In parallelo la prosa si convertiva a quello stile laconico che il Malvezzi propugnava. Del testo si danno le due redazioni, entrambe del 1633: la seconda rielaborata in poche settimane, ad approfondire la lezione del Tarquinio.
