Lysis is a philosophical dialogue by Plato that explores the nature of friendship and love. The dialogue takes place between Socrates and two young boys, Lysis and Menexenus, who are friends. Socrates questions the boys about their friendship and attempts to define what true friendship is. The boys struggle to answer Socrates' questions, and the dialogue becomes a meditation on the nature of friendship and the role of love in friendship. Socrates suggests that true friendship is based on a mutual desire for the good of the other person and that love is a necessary component of friendship. The dialogue ends without a clear resolution, leaving the reader to ponder the nature of friendship and love. Lysis is considered one of Plato's early dialogues and is an important work in the development of his philosophy.Ah, Hippothales, I said; what a noble and really perfect love you have found! I wish that you would favour me with the exhibition which you have been making to the rest of the company, and then I shall be able to judge whether you know what a lover ought to say about his love, either to the youth himself, or to others. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
