In Lysis, Plato turns his attention to the delicate fabric of friendship-the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual ties that bind us to one another. Set in a wrestling school in Athens, the dialogue features Socrates in discussion with two boys, Lysis and Menexenus. Playful at first, the conversation gradually deepens, probing the nature of friendship and asking whether it arises from mutual goodness, shared need, or simply admiration.
Is friendship a reflection of self-love? Is it something we seek in others because of our deficiencies-or our virtues? And why is it that those closest to us often remain the most mysterious?
This modern translation retains the sweetness, humor, and nuance of Plato's original, while making his ideas about relationships, human connection, and love accessible to today's reader.
What You'll Discover in This Modern Translation:
- A Heartfelt Exploration of Friendship - Discover one of the earliest and most thoughtful examinations of what it means to truly care for another.
- Socratic Questioning in its Gentlest Form - Watch how Socrates leads a tender inquiry without harshness, letting curiosity guide the heart.
- Timeless Questions About Love and Connection - Explore whether friendship comes from likeness, difference, or a deeper spiritual resonance.
- An Accessible, Modernized Dialogue - Perfect for readers interested in philosophy, psychology, and the art of human bonds.
- A Philosophical Classic for the Soulful Seeker - Lysis invites you to reflect not only on the friends you have, but the kind of friend you are.
