Lucy's Story follows one family across nearly a millennium from the age of the Vikings and the birth of Normandy, through Rollo and his descendants, the Norman conquest and the castles and conflicts of medieval England. Across the centuries, their story moves from noble houses and ancient blood lines to the villages, rivers and working communities of Kent, where generations lived through a changing England. At the heart of the story is Lucy, born in 1869, whose life becomes the link between generations shaped by hardship, love, loss and extraordinary change. Her son Percy serves through the battles of the first World War. A generation later, another son, George, goes to France in 1940, is captured during the german advance and spends five years as a prisoner of war, his captivity ending with the Long March across a collapsing Germany.
