Chaereas is a young man from Syracuse who falls in love with Callirrhoe, a beautiful woman from Syracuse. They become engaged, but their happiness is short-lived when Callirrhoe is kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery. Chaereas sets out to find her, and after a series of adventures, he finally rescues her. However, their troubles are not over yet, as they are accused of adultery and sentenced to death. In the end, their innocence is proven, and they are reunited and live happily ever after.
