Lover's Gift and Crossing is a collection of two novellas written by the renowned Indian poet and writer, Rabindranath Tagore, and first published in 1918. The first novella, Lover's Gift, tells the story of a young man named Ratan who falls in love with a wealthy woman named Hemangini. Despite their class differences, they begin a secret relationship, but when Hemangini's family discovers their affair, they force her to marry someone of their own social standing. Ratan is heartbroken and becomes a wandering ascetic, but eventually returns to his village and discovers that Hemangini is now a widow. The two are reunited, but their love is still forbidden by society. The second novella, Crossing, is a more philosophical and allegorical tale. It follows the journey of a young man named Nandalal who is seeking enlightenment and travels to a remote village where he meets a mysterious woman named Kamalini. She teaches him about the true nature of reality and the importance of letting go of attachments. As Nandalal continues on his journey, he encounters various obstacles and struggles to apply Kamalini's teachings in his life.Overall, Lover's Gift and Crossing are two beautifully written and insightful stories that explore themes of love, class, societal norms, and spiritual enlightenment. Tagore's prose is poetic and evocative, and his characters are complex and deeply human. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Indian literature and philosophy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
