This book explores the many dimensions of love through some of the most influential voices of the Islamic intellectual tradition, including al-Fārābī, Ibn Sīnā, Ibn Ḥazm, al-Ghazālī, Rābiʿa al-ʿAdawiyya, Ibn ʿArabī and Rūmī. It also considers the Greek philosophical heritage that helped shape Muslim reflections on desire, beauty, and the nature of existence.
Moving between philosophy, spirituality, and poetry, the book enters a world in which earthly and divine love continually mirror one another.
