To Amy some men had a scent signature, an aroma that preceded them as they got close. Fried onion, lemon grass or cloves, pleasant smells. It was a signal that a particular man had the potential to become a close friend or lover, and the same scent would always accompany him as he approached her. There had only been one misfire and that was Simon, and she could never understand why she had not realized that his signature smell of overheated cooking oil meant trouble?
