No: she would hide her grief; she would let no one else know the burden of her life. Richard knew; and above all, God knew: that was enough. So, with an effort, Marjory forced herself to laugh, and said, gaily, I'm getting old, you know; and so Lottie was easily disarmed, and went away. Before she reached home the thought of Marjory quite went out of her mind, for she fancied she saw James Webber in the distance; and her thoughts went back to a far more interesting subject for contemplation, to Lottie's mind (though she would not have confessed it), --namely, herself. CHAPTER XIV. A DARK DAY. E must return to Marjory, whom we left at the garden gate. With a sigh of relief she saw Lottie disappear round the corner, and then she looked up and down the road to see if the neighbours' doors were closed. But up at the other end of the road, one or-two still stood chatting to each other from their little gardens. Marjory sighed and turned to go in, but at that moment Mrs. West opened her door and stood for a moment looking out. Good evening, Marjory, she said, kindly. Your father: is he home yet?
