The Lost Dauphin: Louis XVII Or Onwarenhiiaki, The Indian Iroquois Chief is a historical novel written by Augusta De Grasse Stevens in 1887. The book tells the story of a young boy named Louis-Charles, who is the son of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette of France. After the French Revolution, Louis-Charles is imprisoned with his family and eventually separated from them. The novel imagines that Louis-Charles is rescued by an Indian Iroquois chief named Onwarenhiiaki, who raises him as his own son. The story follows Louis-Charles as he grows up in the Iroquois community, learning their customs and language. He becomes a respected member of the tribe and is given the name Onontio, which means great mountain. However, Louis-Charles never forgets his true identity and longs to return to France to reclaim his rightful place as the dauphin (heir to the throne). The Lost Dauphin is a fictionalized account of the historical mystery surrounding the fate of Louis-Charles, who died in prison at the age of 10. The novel portrays him as a brave and resourceful young man who overcomes adversity and finds a new family in the Iroquois tribe.
