Lilly Clark found the mistake in it.
It is forty-one degrees in the garage and Lilly is reading Physical Review D for the fourth time this month. Page fourteen. Equation 3.17. A coefficient carried in the wrong basis, and a two where no two should be.
The paper says the wall between our universe and the one next door can never be crossed. Nine hundred and forty citations say so. A graduate textbook leans on it. Twenty-two years of physicists have believed it and gone home.
The wall is half as tall as everyone thinks.
Lilly is sixteen. She has been checking other people's papers at her mother's kitchen table since she was nine, on Friday nights, with a second pen, and she is the only person alive who was trained to open the appendix nobody opens.
It takes her three weeks to stop hoping she is wrong. Four months, four hundred and eleven dollars, and a machinist named Arlen Boyce to build the thing that proves it. One second inside it to understand what she has actually made.
And then the only hard question left.
Tell it, and she ends the career of the woman who taught her how to check. Bury it, and the next person finds the door without knowing where the edge is.
Her mother is not wrong. That is the worst part.
