Londinium

Before it was London, it was Londinium, and it shouldn't have existed at all.

There was no village here. No ancient settlement waiting for a new name. Just a gravel terrace above a wild, unembanked river nearly a kilometer wide at high tide, and a decision made by Roman surveyors sometime after the invasion of Britain in AD 43. What they built on that terrace became, within a single decade, the largest city in the entire province. Within two centuries, it was the beating heart of Roman Britain.
