Drawing upon the intellectual legacy of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and the disciplined sobriety of Junayd of Baghdad, this book reveals how mysticism learned not only to negate the ego-but to survive its disappearance through baqāʾ (subsistence).
Through a careful analysis of language, silence, paradox, and spiritual authority, the book explains why extreme mystical utterance required a grammar-and how that grammar protected the tradition from chaos, antinomianism, and political danger. Figures such as Bayazid Bastami appear not as anomalies, but as necessary moments in a disciplined evolution from ecstasy to responsibility.
