Talking to kids about body safety can be awkward. It can also be hard to know how much to say without saying too much or making them afraid. Little Hearts, Safe Bodies was written to help parents start that conversation.
The book teaches children that God made their bodies and that every part of their body should be treated with care. Kids are introduced to private parts, body boundaries, and times when a parent, caregiver, or doctor may need to help take care of their body.
It also makes it clear that body safety rules are not just about strangers. Kids can say no or stop to a touch they do not want, even when it comes from someone they know. They are allowed to change their mind about hugs, kisses, tickling, or other physical affection.
Little Hearts, Safe Bodies talks about secrets, too. A birthday present can be a fun surprise because everyone will eventually know about it. Touching, private pictures, or something that makes a child scared or uncomfortable should never have to stay secret.
The book also addresses what happens if a child does not say no. Sometimes kids get scared. Sometimes they freeze. Sometimes they are confused and do not know what to do. None of those things make what happened their fault.
Kids are encouraged to know who their safe grown-ups are and to tell when something happens that worries or confuses them. If the first person does not listen, they can tell someone else and keep telling until someone helps.
Scripture is included throughout the book to remind children that God made their bodies and cares about what happens to them. They can ask questions about their bodies without shame, and they can talk to Jesus about things that make them scared, uncomfortable, or confused.
Little Hearts, Safe Bodies is part of the Little Hearts Need to Know(TM) series. These books were created to help parents talk with young children about things that are not always easy to explain. The series combines simple language, practical information, and biblical truth to help little hearts understand some pretty big things.
