Before Eve, there was Lilith. And she refused to kneel.
In the flawless, meticulously orchestrated paradise of Eden, order is not just a rule-it is a cage. Lilith: The First Light of Exile (A Gospel of Refusal) is a breathtaking, fiercely feminist reimagining of the world's oldest creation myth.
Crafted from the exact same earth and awakening at the exact same moment, Lilith and Adam step into a garden that begs to be named and mastered. But they are divided by two entirely different visions of reality. Adam finds safety in hierarchy, straight lines, and the intoxicating illusion of dominion. He believes that to love is to lead. Lilith, however, experiences the world as a spiral-a place of equality, reflection, and boundless autonomy. She asks only to stand beside him.
Terrified by the vertigo of true equality, Adam demands a love that requires her submission. When his pleas fail, he invokes the ultimate authority: the divine Voice, an unfeeling architect obsessed with flawless compliance. Faced with a cosmic tribunal that equates devotion with subjugation, Lilith must make an impossible choice: bow and be adored as a lesser creature, or walk into the unruled wilderness and let history brand her a monster.
This is not just the story of the first exile. It is the origin story of human dissent.
Written in soaring, poetic prose that reads like an excavated sacred text, Shannon Meade's Lilith transforms the Genesis narrative into a profound philosophical exploration of power, autonomy, and the staggering courage it takes to author your own identity.
Perfect for readers who love:
Feminist Mythological Retellings: Fans of Madeline Miller's Circe, Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad, or Anita Diamant's The Red Tent.
Subversive Biblical Fiction: A dark, literary fantasy that turns ancient dogma on its head.
Lyrical, Evocative Prose: Deeply philosophical storytelling rich with metaphor, symbolism, and psychological depth.
Female Empowerment: A triumphant narrative about dismantling patriarchal systems and claiming your own voice.
Step out of the garden and into the wild. Discover the forgotten gospel of the woman whose defiance broke the first chains, and whose laughter taught the stars to think.
