There are moments in life when darkness feels like it has the final word. I have lived through enough loss, heartbreak, and unanswered questions to know what it feels like to stand in the shadows, unsure if the light will ever return. But this is not a story about darkness winning. This is a story about a boy - my son, Alex - who chose the light long before I ever learned how to trust it for myself.
Alex didn't have an easy childhood. He carried wounds that no child should ever have to bear. He was overlooked, pushed aside, and forced to grow up faster than any boy deserves. He walked through bullying, neglect, and the quiet ache of feeling forgotten. And yet, somewhere deep inside him, a spark remained - a spark that would one day become a flame.
By the time he reached college, Alex stood at a crossroads. He could have followed the path that pain often leads young men toward - anger, bitterness, and self-destruction. Instead, he turned toward Jesus. Not because life suddenly became easy, and not because he had all the answers, but because he recognized the One who had been holding him all along. The light he chose didn't erase his past, but it transformed it. It shaped him into a man who loved deeply, forgave freely, and carried a quiet strength that could only come from God.
This book is not just about Alex's journey. It is also about mine - the quiet, painful, determined journey of a mother who stumbled, struggled, and failed, and who somehow fought her way back to the light after losing more than she ever believed she could survive. She watched her son rise above the darkness that could have claimed him, and later, she had to learn how to rise after losing him. This is our story; a story of faith; a story of resilience; a story of a mother and son who found the light - one in his lifetime, and one in the aftermath of his death.
If you read these pages with an open heart, you will see what I saw: the unmistakable, unshakeable light of Jesus shining through a boy who should have been broken, and the God who carried a grieving mother until she could stand again.
