How does lighting affect how we see and experience rooms? Perceiving space visually is not at all the same as starting from the physically measurable space. Is it light or darkness that makes a surface appear to be further away? Can light affect the social dynamics of a room? How can you increase the feeling of security in a place? Can a room be perceived as more or less spatial? This book provides answers to these questions and stimulates new thinking around lighting.
The book intersperses theory of perception, light and space with practical tips on analytical methods and sketching techniques. It provides basic knowledge in architectural lighting design but does not present ready-made solutions. That task - to create the light environments - is given to the reader! First published in Swedish, this English edition makes the book available to a new audience of professional and student lighting designers and lighting planners. The book introduces new concepts, such as light topography, and addresses current research, where complex real spaces are viewed in relation to the context with surrounding contrasts.
Illustrated with over 150 beautiful, full colour drawings from the author, this book provides an increased understanding of light and space.
