The Life of Lord Herbert of Cherbury, Written By Himself is a remarkable autobiography offering a rare glimpse into the life and times of Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury (1583-1648). Soldier, diplomat, poet, and philosopher, Herbert was a multifaceted figure in the Jacobean and Caroline eras. This edition, edited by Horace Walpole, presents Herbert's candid account of his experiences, thoughts, and the significant events that shaped his life. From his military service to his diplomatic missions and his philosophical pursuits, Herbert's autobiography provides invaluable insights into the intellectual and social currents of 17th-century England.
Herbert's reflections on honor, religion, and personal conduct, combined with his detailed descriptions of courtly life and international affairs, make this work an enduring historical document. His contributions to religious thought, particularly his articulation of deistic principles, are also explored. A valuable resource for scholars and readers interested in British history, philosophy, and autobiography, this edition preserves the unique voice and perspective of a truly remarkable individual.
