The Life of Isaac Ingalls Stevens is a biography book written by Hazard Stevens. The book chronicles the life of Isaac Ingalls Stevens, an American military officer and politician who played a significant role in the development of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States during the mid-19th century. The book begins with Stevens early life and education, including his time at West Point Military Academy. It then goes on to detail his military career, including his service in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. Stevens most significant contributions, however, were in his role as the first governor of the Washington Territory and as the chief engineer of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The book covers his efforts to establish a government in the newly-formed Washington Territory and his work to survey and build the railroad that connected the Pacific Northwest to the rest of the country. Throughout the book, the author provides insight into Stevens character and motivations, as well as the political and social context of the time. The Life of Isaac Ingalls Stevens is a comprehensive and engaging account of a fascinating figure in American history.1901. Part 1. With maps and illustrations. A loving son writes this Life of his father, General Stevens, Army Engineer, and governor of Washington territory. After graduating at West Point, he served through the Mexican War, participating in several engagements and being wounded in the attack on Mexico City. He was then deployed to Washington with the U.S. Coast Survey in Washington until his appointment as governor of the territory. Besides his duties of Governorship, he surveyed the northern route for the railroad to the Pacific. His drastic measures to suppress disaffection with the Indians made him extremely unpopular, but he was elected territorial delegate to Congress and there defended his actions. He was appointed Colonel of 79th New York Volunteers (Highlanders) at the outbreak of the Civil War, and when eight companies mutinied after First Battle of Bull Run, he took drastic measures to restore order. As a result he was promoted to Brigadier-General, participated in the Port Royal expedition and, then transferred to Virginia to lead the division at Newport News. While serving in northern Virginia as Major-General under Pope he was killed at the Battle of Chantilly. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
