The Life of Benjamin F. Butler is a biography written by Thomas A. Bland in 1879 that chronicles the life and career of Benjamin Franklin Butler, an American lawyer, politician, and Union Army general during the American Civil War. The book provides a detailed account of Butler's early life, his education, and his rise to political prominence in Massachusetts, including his election to the state legislature and his appointment as the state's attorney general. The biography also delves into Butler's military career during the Civil War, including his controversial role in the occupation of New Orleans and his command of the Army of the James during the Siege of Petersburg. Bland provides insight into Butler's political beliefs and his relationship with President Lincoln, as well as his unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for president in 1868.Throughout the book, Bland paints a vivid picture of Butler's personality and character, including his reputation as a shrewd and unscrupulous politician, his staunch support for the abolition of slavery, and his dedication to the Union cause. The Life of Benjamin F. Butler is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of the American Civil War, as well as the political and social landscape of the United States during the 19th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
