The Life and Works of Mencius is a book written by James Legge that provides a comprehensive study of the life and teachings of the Chinese philosopher Mencius. Mencius was a prominent thinker during the Warring States period in China and is considered one of the most important Confucian philosophers. The book begins with a biography of Mencius, including his early life, education, and career as a philosopher. It then delves into his philosophy, which focuses on the cultivation of moral character and the importance of benevolent government. The book includes translations of Mencius' most important works, including the Mencius, which is a collection of his dialogues with various rulers and officials. Legge's analysis provides insight into Mencius' ideas and their significance in Chinese philosophy and history. The Life and Works of Mencius is an essential read for anyone interested in Confucianism, Chinese philosophy, or the history of China. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
