In 1920s Australia, child emigrant Mabel Fishley, now a wife and mother, searches for her roots. She arrives unannounced at a stranger's house to learn the history of her great grandfather. Instead of the tale she expected - of a swashbuckling sea captain - she hears the intriguing story of a lowly Derbyshire labourer flung by circumstance to the other side of the world and the goldfields of Victoria.
