Cubans, if you desire to win this prize you must be ready to pour out your life's blood. I am uot speaking wildly, for I know what war is. But my case was worse than yours, for I was called upon to fire upon that flag under which I had been born, and I tell you that the bitterest moment of my life was when I had to give the command fire upon those who were still my brothers and my countrymen. I do not speak these words to discourage you, I hope to live to see you, sir, (turning to Quesada) crowned with the reward of your country's liberty. I am glad to see many women here to-night. Let me tell you, Cubans, that when God and the women and the United States are on your side, evil itself cannot prevail against you. But above all, I ask the blessing of Almighty God on your cause.
