The Lie About the War is a sharp and provocative critical essay examining the wave of war literature that emerged in the decade following the First World War. Douglas Jerrold offers a dissenting voice against the prevailing trend of anti-war novels and memoirs, which he argues provide a distorted and often purely sentimental view of the conflict.
By analyzing contemporary works, Jerrold challenges the narrative focus of popular accounts that prioritize individual suffering and psychological trauma over the broader historical and moral realities of the combatants. He explores the tension between personal testimony and historical truth, questioning whether the war books of the late 1920s accurately represent the experience and motivations of those who served.
This work serves as a significant historical document in the study of war historiography and literary reception. It invites readers to reconsider the construction of collective memory and the ways in which literature shapes our understanding of global conflict. For students of military history and 20th-century literature, The Lie About the War provides an essential perspective on the intellectual debates surrounding the legacy of the Great War.
