The Songt and Sonnettes of the Earl of Surrey were first published by Tottel, in a very small 4to. volume, in 1557, in the black letter. This edition is Almost Unfindablb. A perfect copy of it would be worth fifty guineas at the least. It does not appear in the collections of Pearson, Farmer, Steevens, and Reed. Nor do I Y Y lection of poetry called The Mirrourfor Magistrates, of which the earliest edition appeared in 1559, 4to.; but a minute account of all the earlier impressions appears in the last and best edition of that work, put forth by Mr. Joseph Haslewood, in 1815,3 vols. 4to. a performance, as perfect in its kind as the archaeological annals of the nineteenth century have witnessed. indeed, at this moment, call to mind any existing copy. But surely Mr. Heber must have it? And what is that edition by Tottel, in 12mo. in the Capel Closet, in the library of Trinity College Cambridge--of which another copy is in the University library--noticed to me in a long letter, by my ardent young bibliomaniacal friend Mr. Hartshorne?] Singularly enough, Surrey's translation of Certain bokesol Virgiles /EnaHs was published the same year, in 4to.: which is so Scabce, that no other copy of it is known but that in the library ofDulwich College; from which Mr. Bolland reprinted it for the itoxburghe-Club. The Songs and Sonnets were reprinted in 1565, 1567, 15'69, 1574, 1585, 1587, 12mo. and perhaps again in the sixteenth century. These editions are all very rare, and indeed require something like a bibliographical review. Lord Spencer possesses the third of 1567, considered the most correct of the earlier ones, and which was made subservient to Dr. Nott's researches. Sir M....
