Letters to Betty at 80 explores themes that readers of any age can relate to-feeling out of place, acceptance versus resignation, perspective, and familial relationships-with the unique perspective of someone who has lived a long life. Reflective questions following each journal entry encourage readers to examine their own lives and find meaning in their experiences.
Bub first began writing letters to her alter ego Betty as part of her grieving process following the death of her beloved husband. These letters grew into her book Letters to Betty. She decided to refocus her conversations with Betty once she turned eighty. Letters to Betty at 80 is an empathetic view into the golden years-losses of friends and family, changing routines, and the realization that while not yet over, most of one's years are behind them. Life was full and loss was not on the horizon. Then it started to creep up slowly and now it is here in full force. There is loss, there is sadness, and there is still life to live... There is no prescription for life at 80. Each journey is a unique venture into the wherever and whatever lies ahead.
