The author takes as his starting point the Norse sagas of Erik the Red and Greenland, drawing on historical and geographical facts to weave a fascinating narrative full of mysticism and adventure. The series tells the life of Erik, the supposed bastard great-grandson of Leif Eriksson, the first European to arrive in America. Erik's story begins three generations later in the small, isolated Norse settlement in what is now Massachusetts, United States.

In the first book, we follow Erik's childhood and youth, his adventures at sea, and his battles against wild animals and Native Americans, in an America untouched by European influence and religion. Amidst respectful yet conflictual relations with the native people, Erik grows up with a dilemma: should he return to the north, his old and unknown homeland, or should he stay in the New Land with his native friends and family? Surrounded by an atmosphere of mysticism and belief in the old Norse gods, Erik also prepares to become a mythical warrior, a Ulfhednar, and thus defend his people from all threats, at any cost.
