Polemo-middinia is a macaronic poem attributed to William Drummond of Hawthornden, a Scottish poet writing in the early 17th century. This humorous work blends Latin with Scots vernacular, creating a unique and entertaining literary experience. The title itself, a hybrid of Latin and Scots, hints at the poem's playful nature.
The poem recounts a mock-heroic battle, employing exaggerated language and absurd situations for comedic effect. Polemo-middinia stands as a fascinating example of Renaissance wit and linguistic innovation. Its enduring appeal lies in its clever use of language and its lighthearted treatment of traditional epic themes.
