Hieronymi Osorii Lusitani De Gloria Libri Quinque Ad Ioannem Tertium, Lusitaniae Regem is a Latin text written by Jerónimo Osório, a prominent Portuguese humanist and historian of the 16th century. This work, addressed to John III, King of Portugal, explores the concept of glory through five books. Osório, known as the 'Portuguese Cicero' for his elegant Latin style, delves into historical and philosophical reflections on achieving lasting fame and honor.
This edition, edited by Gustav Christoph Sarpe, presents Osório's eloquent prose, offering insights into the values and ideals of the Renaissance period, particularly as they were understood within the context of the Portuguese court. De Gloria remains a valuable resource for scholars of history, literature, and philosophy, providing a window into the intellectual landscape of 16th-century Europe and the relationship between a humanist scholar and a powerful monarch.
