In April 1865, as the American Civil War drew toward its end, two generals met in a modest farmhouse in North Carolina. There were no cheering crowds and no grand halls; only careful words, revised agreements, and the quiet recognition that the war could not continue. At Bennett Place, the largest surrender of the Civil War took place, bringing organized Confederate resistance east of the Mississippi River to an end.
Nearly sixty years later, a monument rose on that same ground.
The Last Surrender: Bennett Place and the Meaning of Unity explores both moments; the surrender that ended the war's final major chapter and the Unity Monument that later sought to give that ending meaning. Through careful historical narrative, architectural interpretation, and reflection on memory and commemoration, this book examines how unity was understood, challenged, and redefined across generations.
Rather than celebrating victory or minimizing loss, the Unity Monument stands as a reminder that peace is not an achievement but a responsibility. Its two columns; separate yet joined; reflect the nation's enduring struggle to reconcile division with shared identity.
