The Last of the Ruthvens is a novel by Dinah Maria Craik that tells the story of a Scottish family, the Ruthvens, during the 16th century. The family is known for their reputation as ruthless and ambitious, but they are also deeply loyal to each other. The story follows the youngest member of the family, Una, who is sent away to live with her aunt and uncle after her father is killed in battle. Una struggles to adjust to her new life and longs to return to her family and her home. Meanwhile, the Ruthvens face political turmoil and must navigate their way through dangerous alliances and betrayals. As tensions rise, Una must decide where her loyalties lie and whether she can trust those around her. The Last of the Ruthvens is a gripping tale of family, loyalty, and betrayal set against the backdrop of Scotland's turbulent history.Lord Gowrie turned quickly and looked at Lettice--rapturously, yet bashfully, as a youth looks at his first idol. Then he repeated his intention of departure, though in a tone less joyous than before. Lettice heard, without emotion, as it seemed, only that her two thin hands--she was a little creature, pale and slight--were pressed tightly together. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
