At Nasbro, limestone became lime, a company became a town, and work shaped nearly every part of community life. Then the kilns went cold.
The Last Kilns of Nasbro tells the factual story of a Wisconsin settlement built around quarrying and lime production. It follows the town from the extraction of stone and the operation of its kilns to the working lives, relationships, and shared institutions that grew around the industry.
Drawing on geological surveys, company records, journalism, local history, and attributed memory, Elias Vale Marrow distinguishes the Nast/Western and Standard operations while tracing Nasbro's homes, store, school, fires, modernization, closure, and long departure.
But Nasbro's history did not end when production ceased. This account follows the company town's afterlife through an altered landscape, surviving structures, and the memories by which a vanished community continues to be understood.
Rather than smooth conflicting dates into legend, the book preserves uncertainty and shows what the surviving evidence can-and cannot-tell us about the people who made a life between the plants.
