And, most know, how difficult raising young black boys can be, so religion/spirituality tends to be the foundation; where God becomes not only their Helper' but their Father. Eventually the bitter, unfeeling, and unsympathetic environment that is right outside their front door. A world where sex is acceptable before high school. The gangs and cliques become family; gambling and selling drugs gets introduced before legit occupations. And seeing someone with a gun is like seeing a magician with a deck of cards - NORMAL. Therefore, when one gets exposed to cold conditions (heartless, ruthless, unapologetic, cutthroat, violent, and so on) the warmth of a mother's feminine qualities gets drowned out by a masculine atmosphere. Eventually, these youth become detached from an existence where going to school is the only answer to poverty. Detached from the idea that graduating high school means they will quiet the stomach grumblings. Thus, fast money becomes addictive; and having a reputation and some street cred attracts the opposite sex. So as a writer and storyteller, E. Wells Jr. wants to make a point. A point that says: mistakes don't disqualify the blessings, a mess can be turned into a message, and the pain that fueled bitterness, negativity, and unforgiveness can also fuel praise and appreciation for the future.
He wants to breathe life into characters who are flawed, but who craft, and mold flaws into unblemished gifts. People who rise to the occasion with scenarios that allows his readers to answer questions of right and wrong. Good or bad. Should a man be condemned for stealing bread when he's hungry? He wants to own his story and take control of the narrative. And by changing his focus from the ugly and detestable, he was able to place his attention on the aesthetic elements of his surroundings-and allow the beauty of resilience to shine forth.
