This book is the fourth story in The Boundary Walker series.
Semi-retired Colonel Hamish Hamilton and his team from MIC, Military Intelligence Cryptids, are 'asked' by the Mermaid Queen to find her husband, the King. Asked might be a bit too polite, as she is holding a Royal Navy experimental one-man submarine hostage, somewhere off the west coast of Scotland.

Afterwards, the King asks Hamilton for help with his wayward daughter, who, much to his horror, has become infatuated with a local fisherman. Hamilton may not be the best person to help with romantic situations.
Ex-Colonel Maddox interferes once again with MICs (Military Intelligence Cryptids) and has to be politely told where to go. Hamilton advises him that he may lose his head once he gets there.
Hamilton Is summoned down to London, fearing the worse. It's worse than he dreaded; he is promoted again.
While Hamilton goes off to Norway to deal with some Trolls who have kidnapped some Elves, Captain Macduff has to hunt down a group of Vampires in the Scottish Highlands.
All Hamilton wants to do, is to retire to his apartment overlooking the River Clyde.
