The deed was signed in a notary's office, in her father's own hand, while he was still well enough to walk the olive rows himself. Three weeks after the funeral, her brothers begin to ask, gently at first, when she intends to give it back.
Nour Belhadj is thirty, an editor at a small publishing house in Algiers, and she comes home to the village for her father's birthday expecting nothing more than an ordinary, loving weekend: her mother's cooking, her brothers' noise, the olive grove her father has worked his whole life.
Then Youcef Belhadj dies, and the paper he left behind opens the family along a seam none of them knew was there. The land is hers. Her three brothers want it renounced. And her mother Amina, who signed away her own inheritance at seventeen and has never once said so out loud, begs her to keep the peace, because peace is what the women of this family have always been asked to pay for.
What follows is a quiet war fought with notaries and phone calls and the things families say at the table instead of the things they mean. It ends in a courtroom, where the file is read into the record and a name no one in the family recognises is read out with it.
Because among her father's papers, in a tin box kept at the back of a cupboard for forty years, Nour has found the traces of a woman her family has never once mentioned. The more she learns about that woman, the less she can believe the land was a gift at all.
A novel about inheritance and silence: about what gets written down, what is agreed will never be said, and what daughters are asked to give away so that everyone else can stay comfortable.
