This final volume of The Alabama Frontier Series traces the survival and rebuilding of Native nations after the nineteenth century, including the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, the Muscogee Nation, the Cherokee Nation, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and the United Keetoowah Band. It also examines schools, allotment, citizenship rolls, museums, NAGPRA, recognition, and the continuing legal meaning of old treaties and promises.

The book returns again and again to Alabama itself-to the Coosa country, ancestral places, old roads, burial grounds, markers, rivers, and landscapes that still carry the evidence of what came before.

This is not a story about a vanished people.

It is a story about survival, memory, sovereignty, and the ways history remains present beneath the modern map.

History remembers the conquerors. This series remembers everyone else.
