G. W. Lines's The Ladysmith Siege is a scarce and detailed record of the Second Boer War, documenting the 118-day encirclement of Ladysmith, Natal, by Boer forces from 2 November 1899 to 28 February 1900. Of particular value to military historians and genealogists, it combines historical record with archival detail. The work lists the British regiments defending the town, together with members of local volunteer formations such as the Ladysmith Town Guard. It also records the civilian population trapped within the besieged town, including women and children, and reproduces official military and municipal notices issued during the crisis. A notable feature is the complete facsimile of all eight issues of The Ladysmith Bombshell, the humorous and satirical newspaper produced by soldiers and residents during the siege. Written and illustrated under bombardment, it provides a distinctive contemporary insight into life and morale within the garrison. Combining military, civilian and documentary material, Lines's volume is an important primary source for the siege and the wider history of the South African War.
