Dieses Buch untersucht wie Heinrich von Kleist die Medien seiner Zeit handhabte. Es geht darum zu zeigen, wie eng Kleists literarisches Schaffen verbunden war mit seinen Publikationsprojekten, und zu diskutieren, wie seine Literatur als eine Reflexion der neuen politischen Ordnungen und kommunikativen Bedingungen um 1800 anzusehen ist.
Die Untersuchung wirft einen intensiven Blick auf Kleists Mediennutzung und untersucht neben seiner Praxis des Briefeschreibens seine vielfältigen Publikationsprojekte z.B. die Kunstzeitschrift Phöbus oder die Berliner Abendblätter. Kleists literarisches Schaffen ist Teil dieser publizistischen Kalküle, stellt aber auch auf einer inhaltlich-ästhetischen Ebene immer wieder die Komplexität und das Scheitern von Kommunikation in den Vordergrund. Kleists philosophische und essayistische Texte wie der Text über das Marionettentheater bilden eine Matrix ab, die diese publizistischen und literarischen Experimente auf einer theoretischen Ebene beschreibbar machen.
Kleists Arbeit als Autor, Theoretiker und Publizist war darauf ausgerichtet, Kommunikation neu zu denken und zu reflektieren, dass soziale Kommunikation um 1800 aus komplexen Interaktionen hervorging, die eine neue Einbindung de Publikums nötig machten.
