Book 7 of Kit's Little Sparks. By Chris Kuczynski, an engineer turned patent attorney and a co-founder of a preschool.
Kit built something. It did not work. Oops! Kit's face says it all. Then Sparks gives Kit a small nudge. Try again. So Kit does. The second try is closer. The third try works. The fourth try works better.
This is the single most important book in the series. Resilience is not a personality trait. It is a learned behavior, and it is learned by watching characters fail, accept the failure, and try again on purpose. Adult inventors call this iteration. Toddlers call it Oops, again! The neuroscience is identical: the brain learns more from a near-miss than from a clean win.
Book 7 builds the foundation for everything that comes after. Without Try Again, the inventor's mindset collapses. Kit shows your child what falling looks like, what getting up looks like, and what slightly-better looks like. The illustrations are intentionally honest: the broken thing is broken, the new attempt is rough, the eventual success is modest.
Illustrated in watercolor with hand-drawn arrows showing each iteration. Sturdy board pages. Free read-along audio with intentional pauses where children can shout TRY AGAIN! Free educator guide with a parent-and-child failure journal.
For parents whose child gives up the moment something is hard. For preschool teachers building grit and growth mindset. For caregivers who want to model Oops! themselves.
Written by Chris Kuczynski, an engineer for the first twelve years of his career, then a registered patent attorney, and a co-founder of a preschool. He wrote the Kit's Little Sparks series to give two to four year olds the language of invention long before kindergarten.
Talk about a time you tried something and it did not work. Then tell your child how you tried again. Make the story specific. Children remember what their grown-ups failed at and survived. Book 8 is what happens when the second try gets better.
